General

What is the Dal-ACM

"Dal-ACM" is synonomous for Dalhousie Student Chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery. It is a student chapter directly ratified by the International ACM. The chapter aims to provide a healthy and enjoyable academic environment for its members and promote activity, research and development within Dalhousie University. The Dal-ACM organizes conferences, seminars and projects (such as TigerBooks) within the university to do this.

Is the Dal-ACM only for Computer Science Students?

No, we welcome everyone!

What does my Dal-ACM membership get me?

Dal-ACM membership fees are $10 annually and are valid for one year from the date of payment (i.e., there is no set registration period). This gets you free or discounted access to all events that the Dal-ACM hosts or organizes. The ACM has its own server in the Computer Science Building which you are given an account on. It also gets you free Timbits/pizza at meetings when we have them!

How does my Dal-ACM membership fee apply to the International ACM?

Both are separate fees. A Dal-ACM membership applies only to the local student chapter. A separate membership fee is required to be an international member.

What activities does the Dal-ACM engage in?

Looking back at the past year... LOTS! We have a number of projects in the works that deal with the DSU quite significantly -- these include TigerEvents, TigerBooks, a new Frosh Orientation Website, a DSU Medical/Dental Opt-out plan website, and we are hoping to begin some hardware projects in the near future. We mainly now carry out development on things that interest us, from image and shape recognition to learning new languages.

We are also VERY open to new suggestions. Have an idea for a project? Need help with a program? Bring it to us and we'd be more than happy to help you out.

How do I join?

To get involved is easy. You can send us an email at mailto:join@dal-acm.ca.
